Commitment

1

The size of the bonito

In spring, young 2-3kg first-catch bonito; in autumn, richly fatty 4-5kg returning bonito, carefully selected by season.

2

Raw bonito from Kochi

Most Kochi bonito is pole-and-line caught, leaving it beautiful and undamaged. We ship our select bonito direct from the port.

3

Straw from Shiga

We use straw hand-cut ourselves from vast contracted fields in Shiga. Dried straw burns hot with the finest smoky aroma.

4

The grilling

Over straw flames reaching 1000 degrees, we sear a crust about 5mm into the flesh, then finish with residual heat to lock in flavor.

5

The thickness of the cut

Cut over 1cm thick so the straw aroma fills your mouth, brimming with bonito flavor and a springy texture.

6

Our chosen salt

A fully sun-dried salt handmade by artisans from Kochi seawater. We select larger crystals for a mellow mineral taste.

Service

01

Robata & Warayaki

Bonito from Kochi and Omi beef from Shiga, grilled over straw right before you. Seasonal fish and vegetables draw out their fullest flavor over charcoal.

02

03

04

Omi Beef & Omi Chicken

Shiga's specialty Omi beef, straw-grilled or miso-marinated, and overnight-dried Omi chicken. Enjoy Shiga's premium ingredients dynamically over charcoal in Minami-Kusatsu.

05

Banquets & Private Hire

Banquet courses with free-flow drinks, and full-venue bookings for 35–45 guests. Steps from Minami-Kusatsu Station — ideal for company parties and gatherings.

How to enjoy Robata

Robata Story

01

Head for the counter where the straw burns

One to two minutes from the east exit of Minami-Kusatsu Station, at Liberty Minami-Kusatsu 2F. From the counter seats facing the straw grill you can watch the bonito wrapped in flame.

02

Start with the medium, one slice at a time

Straw-grilled bonito starts at 1,490 yen for the medium, about two portions. Take the first slice unseasoned and taste the smoke held in the surface.

03

With the large, change as you go

Work through the condiments, rock salt and citrus. The large, about four portions at 2,480 yen, gives you enough to keep shifting the flavor to the last piece.

04

Smoke, drink, and lose track of time

All 45 seats allow smoking, and guests under 20 cannot enter. We suggest Shiga sake, dry through sweet, to sit alongside the straw-grilled plates.

Tired of the Usual Izakaya? Enrich Your Gatherings in Minami-Kusatsu

Lately, it feels like I always order the same things when I go to an izakaya... Have you ever felt this way? While the Minami-Kusatsu area has many charming izakayas, it's common to hear people say they gravitate toward familiar classic dishes, making their dining experience lack a sense of novelty. Especially when planning a gathering or an important banquet near Minami-Kusatsu Station, it's natural to want to provide memorable cuisine that everyone can enjoy. Falling into a routine can be a major factor that diminishes the joy of dining out.

We offer a clear solution to this monotony: actively incorporating the perspective of the seasons. Japan's four seasons bring unique seasonal ingredients, and by utilizing them, our cuisine achieves limitless potential. Gatherings and banquets that don't consider the season often miss out on the special flavors that can only be enjoyed at that specific time. Seasonal ingredients are not just delicious; they allow you to feel the local climate and culture, representing a truly once-in-a-lifetime encounter.

The Downsides of Ignoring the Seasons

  • Missed Opportunities for Discovery: You miss out on the special tastes you can only encounter during that particular season.
  • Lack of Excitement: The same old menu makes it difficult to have a truly memorable and moving dining experience.
  • Duller Conversations: Seasonal ingredients and limited-time menus become excellent topics to enrich conversation at the table.
  • Potential for Boredom: Repeating the same flavors may cause customers to feel bored.

But rest assured. At our Minami-Kusatsu izakaya, we have devised ways to solve this problem and deliver fresh surprises and delight to our customers every time. In the next section, we will detail how our seasonal menus can brighten your gatherings and banquets in Minami-Kusatsu.

Savoring Seasonal Delights: Our Minami-Kusatsu Izakaya's Limited-Time Menus

We prepare our dishes with care so that your gathering or banquet near Minami-Kusatsu Station becomes a journey through the changing seasons.

Spring - Bringing the Joy of New Growth to Your Table

Spring is a season that evokes the breath of life. The subtle bitterness of wild mountain vegetables, the rich umami of fresh shellfish, and the crispness of spring produce add color to the table. At our Minami-Kusatsu izakaya, we offer a variety of limited-time spring menus so you can fully enjoy the delicate flavors of this time of year.

  • Assorted Spring Mountain Vegetable Tempura: We wrap spring blessings like tara no me (angelica tree sprouts) and kogomi (ostrich fern) in a crispy batter. Their unique aroma and slight bitterness signal the arrival of spring.
  • Sake-Steamed Clams and Rapeseed Blossoms: Plump clams and vibrant green rapeseed blossoms are steamed in sake. This dish highlights the natural flavors of the ingredients with its gentle taste.
  • Sakura-Dai (Cherry Blossom Sea Bream) Sashimi: In season during spring, this sea bream has firm flesh with an elegant fat content and delicate sweetness. We serve it thinly sliced for you to enjoy its pure flavor.

Summer - Colorful Dishes That Invite a Cool Breeze

Light, refreshing dishes that are visually cool take center stage in summer, helping you forget the heat. We use plenty of seasonal summer vegetables and fresh seafood to bring a refreshing touch to your summer gatherings in Minami-Kusatsu.

  • Blanched Hamo (Conger Eel) with Plum Sauce: Hamo, a luxury summer fish, is carefully deboned and lightly blanched. Enjoy its unique texture and light flavor with our special plum sauce.
  • Agebitashi of Summer Vegetables: Colorful summer vegetables like eggplant, bell peppers, and paprika are lightly fried and steeped in a special dashi broth. Served chilled, it's a perfect side dish.
  • Salt-Grilled Ayu (Sweetfish): Known as the queen of clear streams, ayu is a summer classic. We grill it slowly and carefully so you can savor its fragrant skin and fluffy meat.

Autumn - A Feast of Bountiful Harvests

The autumn of appetite is truly the season of flavors. The rich bounty of the land and sea, including mushrooms, chestnuts, saury, and returning bonito, graces our tables. As a Minami-Kusatsu izakaya, we offer deep, rich flavors that make the most of this bountiful season.

  • Salt-Grilled Sanma (Pacific Saury): Fatty, seasonal saury is simply salt-grilled. The fragrant skin and juicy meat pair exceptionally well with sake.
  • Mushroom Dobin Mushi: This earthenware pot soup, luxuriously made with fragrant mushrooms like matsutake, is a heartwarming dish for a long autumn evening.
  • Takikomi Gohan with Chestnuts and Chicken: Fluffy chestnuts and savory chicken cooked with our special dashi broth create a delicious rice dish, perfect for finishing your meal.

Winter - Hearty Dishes to Warm Body and Soul

In the harsh cold, warm dishes heat you up from the inside out. Winter brings an abundance of deeply flavorful and rich dishes, such as hot pots and seasonal seafood. We fill your banquets and gatherings in Minami-Kusatsu with a warm and plentiful table.

  • Kani Nabe (Crab Hot Pot): A luxurious hot pot with rich crab miso and plump meat. This classic winter dish will warm you to the core.
  • Buri Daikon (Yellowtail and Daikon Radish): The combination of fatty winter yellowtail and daikon radish that has absorbed plenty of dashi is exquisite. A gently simmered, comforting dish.
  • Deep-Fried Anko (Monkfish): Monkfish, known for its unique texture and flavor, is fried to a fragrant finish. It's also an ideal snack with drinks.
