Commitment

1

The size of the bonito

In spring, young 2-3kg first-catch bonito; in autumn, richly fatty 4-5kg returning bonito, carefully selected by season.

2

Raw bonito from Kochi

Most Kochi bonito is pole-and-line caught, leaving it beautiful and undamaged. We ship our select bonito direct from the port.

3

Straw from Shiga

We use straw hand-cut ourselves from vast contracted fields in Shiga. Dried straw burns hot with the finest smoky aroma.

4

The grilling

Over straw flames reaching 1000 degrees, we sear a crust about 5mm into the flesh, then finish with residual heat to lock in flavor.

5

The thickness of the cut

Cut over 1cm thick so the straw aroma fills your mouth, brimming with bonito flavor and a springy texture.

6

Our chosen salt

A fully sun-dried salt handmade by artisans from Kochi seawater. We select larger crystals for a mellow mineral taste.

How to enjoy Robata

Robata Story

01

Head for the counter where the straw burns

One to two minutes from the east exit of Minami-Kusatsu Station, at Liberty Minami-Kusatsu 2F. From the counter seats facing the straw grill you can watch the bonito wrapped in flame.

02

Start with the medium, one slice at a time

Straw-grilled bonito starts at 1,490 yen for the medium, about two portions. Take the first slice unseasoned and taste the smoke held in the surface.

03

With the large, change as you go

Work through the condiments, rock salt and citrus. The large, about four portions at 2,480 yen, gives you enough to keep shifting the flavor to the last piece.

04

Smoke, drink, and lose track of time

All 45 seats allow smoking, and guests under 20 cannot enter. We suggest Shiga sake, dry through sweet, to sit alongside the straw-grilled plates.

Seasonal Delights and Smoking Comfort at Minami-Kusatsu Izakaya

Seasonal Blessings and Relaxing Moments at a Smoking-Friendly Izakaya in Minami-Kusatsu

Are you looking for a place near Minami-Kusatsu Station where you can enjoy seasonal dishes and drinks to your heart's content, while also being able to smoke? When dining out, it's natural to want to engage in lively conversation and relax without any worries. However, with fewer izakayas allowing smoking these days, we often hear comments like, The food at that place was good, but the smoking area was inconvenient, or Isn't there a good, smoking-friendly place where I can go with friends or colleagues? For those who especially want to savor fresh, seasonal ingredients at their best, choosing the right restaurant is crucial.

To meet such customer demands, our establishment in Minami-Kusatsu offers both 'seasonal delicacies' and a 'space where you can enjoy smoking to your heart's content.' In this column, we introduce information that will encourage you to 'want to visit and use our services,' from the charm of our seasonal menus that we proudly present, to our comfortable smoking environment, and even tips for utilizing our private party options perfect for large gatherings. Here are some hints to enrich your nights in Minami-Kusatsu.

Minami-Kusatsu Smoking-Friendly Izakaya: Where Seasonal Delights Meet Blissful Relaxation

What we value most at our establishment is offering our customers the most delicious ingredients of each season. And we wish for you to enjoy those exquisite flavors in a truly relaxed state. While many izakayas are moving towards non-smoking or segregated smoking areas, as a Minami-Kusatsu Smoking-Friendly Izakaya, we provide a space where smoking customers can enjoy our food and drinks without any reservations.

Sea and Mountain Delicacies Announcing the Arrival of Spring

Spring is the season when the blessings of the sea and mountains begin to sprout. Seasonal seafood, firm and rich in fat, can be fully enjoyed as sashimi, showcasing its freshness. For example, we offer dishes made with an abundance of unique spring ingredients, such as the beautiful pale pink Sakura-dai (cherry blossom snapper) and bitter wild vegetables served as tempura. Enjoying seasonal cuisine under the warm sunlight, leisurely savoring a cigarette in our smoking area, brings an even deeper sense of satisfaction.

  • Examples of Recommended Spring Menu Items:
    • Sakura-dai (Cherry Blossom Snapper) cured with kelp and tossed with seasonal vegetables
    • Simmered bamboo shoots, wakame seaweed, and udo (Japanese spikenard)
    • Firefly squid marinated in soy sauce

Vibrant Summer Ingredients and Refreshing Delicacies

In summer, powerful ingredients bathed in the sun's bounty take center stage. The lively seafood nurtured by the summer sea is especially exceptional. Brightly colored summer vegetables adorn the table, creating a delightful experience for both the eyes and the palate. At our restaurant, we will entertain you with seasonal menus, offering fresh seafood with refreshing seasonings and devising light dishes perfect for the hot summer. A cool interior, delicious food and cold drinks, and a comfortable smoking environment will be the ultimate luxury on a summer night.

Our smoking seats are a comfortable space with careful ventilation, ensuring they do not disturb your meal. You can enjoy your meal, conversation, and a cigarette at your own pace without worrying about nearby tables.

Direct from Kochi! A Feast of Minami-Kusatsu Warayaki and Seasonal Seafood

Our signature dish is Warayaki (straw-grilled) - fresh bonito directly from Kochi, grilled with dynamic flames. Upon hearing Minami-Kusatsu Warayaki, some of you might already imagine its aromatic scent and concentrated umami. By quickly grilling over straw flames, the surface becomes fragrant and crispy, while the inside remains moist, achieving an exquisite doneness. The rich, unique aroma of straw, different from charcoal grilling, whets the appetite.

The Charm of Warayaki: Enjoyed with All Five Senses

The performance of flames dancing before your eyes is truly breathtaking. The sight of flames engulfing the ingredients with a sizzle and fragrant smoke rising is captivating to watch. This warayaki technique is applied not only to bonito but also to the most delicious seasonal seafood available at the time. For instance, you can enjoy rich, fatty returning bonito in autumn, or yellowtail and mackerel in winter, all straw-grilled. The ability to savor this dynamic dish while comfortably smoking is a major appeal of our Minami-Kusatsu Smoking-Friendly Izakaya.

  • Warayaki Highlights:
    • Uses fresh seafood directly from Kochi
    • Concentrated aroma of straw and umami of seafood
    • Live cooking experience grilled right before your eyes
    • Features seasonal seafood that changes throughout the year

Furthermore, we are particular about the freshness of our Minami-Kusatsu seafood. We carefully select the best fish from the market daily. Our sashimi platters are colorfully arranged with seasonal seafood, making them visually splendid. Alongside Warayaki, they are one of our two signature offerings. For sashimi, we provide various seasonings such as light soy sauce and special Tosa soy sauce, which enhance the flavor of each seafood. Please enjoy our seasonal seafood to your heart's content.

Relax with Large Groups! Minami-Kusatsu Private Party for 45 Guests: A Feast of Seasonal Delights

Many people find it challenging to find a place for large gatherings, whether it's a company banquet, a social event with friends, or a family celebration. There aren't many izakayas that can accommodate a Minami-Kusatsu private party for 45 guests and also allow smoking. Our restaurant can accommodate private parties for up to 45 people, providing a space where everyone can relax and enjoy themselves. Our convenient location is also easily accessible for residents of the Noji area, making us an ideal choice for those looking for an Izakaya in Noji.

Special Moments Only Possible with a Private Party

The greatest advantage of private use is being able to create a lively atmosphere solely among your participants, without worrying about others. We are also flexible regarding the menu content, adapting to your requests. For example, if you consult with us in advance, we can propose an optimal banquet plan that includes a special course featuring seasonal ingredients, caters to allergies, or considers dietary preferences.

  • Benefits of a Private Banquet:
    • Accommodates up to 45 guests
    • Enjoy a private space without reservations
    • Special courses utilizing seasonal ingredients can be arranged
    • Smoking-friendly environment ensures all participants are comfortable

At large banquets, some smokers may have experienced having to leave their seats to find a smoking area, interrupting conversations. At our restaurant, everyone can enjoy their meal in the same space, and smokers can do so comfortably. This is a unique strength of a Minami-Kusatsu Smoking-Friendly Izakaya and is particularly appreciated when utilizing our private party services.

Discovering New Charms of Minami-Kusatsu Izakaya: Harmony of Cuisine and Space

When you say Minami-Kusatsu Izakaya, there are various types. However, what our establishment aims for is not just to provide delicious food, but to be a place where each customer can truly relax and spend fulfilling time. Our dishes, utilizing seasonal ingredients, bring out the maximum deliciousness unique to each period, enriching your dining experience.

Seasonal Drink Pairings

To complement our dishes, we offer a wide selection of seasonal limited-edition sake and our proud local sake. For example, we can suggest various drinks to match the changing seasons: sake with a refreshing aroma in spring, crisp and dry sake in summer, hiyaoroshi (aged sake) in autumn, and delicious warmed junmai-shu in winter. Seasonal ingredients, perfectly paired drinks, and a smoking environment where you can relax to your heart's content. When these elements come together, they create a special izakaya experience, different from the ordinary.
