Commitment

1

The size of the bonito

In spring, young 2-3kg first-catch bonito; in autumn, richly fatty 4-5kg returning bonito, carefully selected by season.

2

Raw bonito from Kochi

Most Kochi bonito is pole-and-line caught, leaving it beautiful and undamaged. We ship our select bonito direct from the port.

3

Straw from Shiga

We use straw hand-cut ourselves from vast contracted fields in Shiga. Dried straw burns hot with the finest smoky aroma.

4

The grilling

Over straw flames reaching 1000 degrees, we sear a crust about 5mm into the flesh, then finish with residual heat to lock in flavor.

5

The thickness of the cut

Cut over 1cm thick so the straw aroma fills your mouth, brimming with bonito flavor and a springy texture.

6

Our chosen salt

A fully sun-dried salt handmade by artisans from Kochi seawater. We select larger crystals for a mellow mineral taste.

Service

How to enjoy Robata

Robata Story

01

Head for the counter where the straw burns

One to two minutes from the east exit of Minami-Kusatsu Station, at Liberty Minami-Kusatsu 2F. From the counter seats facing the straw grill you can watch the bonito wrapped in flame.

02

Start with the medium, one slice at a time

Straw-grilled bonito starts at 1,490 yen for the medium, about two portions. Take the first slice unseasoned and taste the smoke held in the surface.

03

With the large, change as you go

Work through the condiments, rock salt and citrus. The large, about four portions at 2,480 yen, gives you enough to keep shifting the flavor to the last piece.

04

Smoke, drink, and lose track of time

All 45 seats allow smoking, and guests under 20 cannot enter. We suggest Shiga sake, dry through sweet, to sit alongside the straw-grilled plates.

A private room is the ideal choice, especially when you want to cherish your private time, focus on conversation, or celebrate without worrying about your surroundings.

Our izakaya in Minami-Kusatsu is not just any ordinary pub. Based on the concept of being more than an izakaya, but not quite a kappo restaurant, we combine the casual, approachable atmosphere of an izakaya with the high-quality cuisine and serene environment of a traditional kappo establishment. For instance, our Straw-Grilled Bonito Direct from Kochi, shipped from the Tosa-Shimizu fishing port, is imbued with the fragrant aroma of straw, grilled to be crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside. One bite will astonish you with its freshness and the chef's skill. We also offer Shiga's prized brand, Omi Beef, prepared in various styles that have earned praise from many of our guests.

Our pride extends beyond our cuisine. To help create a special moment for each and every guest, we offer a wide variety of private rooms. Confused About Choosing a Private Room? A Guide to Using Rooms for Every Occasion

When you decide to use a private room at an izakaya in Minami-Kusatsu, what criteria do you use to choose one? Perhaps you've had the experience of choosing a place simply because it has private rooms, only to find it wasn't what you imagined. For example, the room you used for an important business dinner was not soundproof, or it was too small to be comfortable. Or maybe at a casual gathering near Minami-Kusatsu Station with close friends, the private room felt so cramped that it hindered conversation.

While private rooms offer the significant advantage of ensuring a private space, choosing one without considering its type, layout, size, and facilities can potentially ruin your dining experience. Selecting a private room that doesn't match your purpose or the occasion can lead to a less than satisfactory time.

We want to provide our guests with an experience they will be truly happy with. To achieve this, we believe it's important for you to clearly understand your purpose and what kind of private room is best for it. In the following sections, we will explain in detail how to choose and utilize our private rooms for specific occasions to ensure you have the best possible time. We hope you will see how our concept of being more than an izakaya, but not quite a kappo restaurant comes to life within the space of our private rooms.

Pitfalls to Avoid When Choosing a Private Room

  • Mismatch of Group Size and Room Size: A small group in a room that's too large can feel uncomfortable, while a large group in a small room will feel cramped. It's crucial to choose a room appropriate for the number of guests.

  • Inconsistency Between Purpose and Atmosphere: Choosing a room that's too casual for business entertainment or too quiet for a lively party can make it difficult to achieve your objectives.

  • Failure to Check Facilities: It's essential to confirm in advance whether the necessary facilities are available, such as needing a smoking-friendly room but getting a non-smoking one, or requiring a projector that isn't installed.

The Added Value of Using a Private Room

  1. Ensured Privacy: You can focus on important conversations or business discussions without worrying about being seen or overheard. It allows for deeper communication as you can speak freely about personal matters.

  2. A Sense of Exclusivity: An independent space like a private room creates a special, out-of-the-ordinary atmosphere, making for a memorable occasion. It's also perfect for celebrating birthdays and anniversaries.

  3. Greater Flexibility: You can enjoy your conversation at any volume and with any gestures without having to be considerate of others. Guests with children can also enjoy their meal without worrying about disturbing other customers.

For Important Business Dinners and Receptions: Choosing a Private Room that Values Formality and Privacy

For customers searching for Business Entertainment in Minami-Kusatsu, the private room is a crucial element that represents the establishment itself. For important business negotiations that could determine success or for dinners to express gratitude, the quality of the space is just as important as the taste of the food. Our izakaya in Minami-Kusatsu offers private rooms that are perfect for such occasions, where our concept of more than an izakaya, but not quite a kappo restaurant is fully realized.

Ensuring a Private Space with High-Quality Furnishings

For business entertainment and dinners, ensuring privacy is the top priority. Our horigotatsu (sunken kotatsu) private rooms are designed to be completely private, providing an environment where you can focus on conversation without being disturbed by the voices or gazes from adjacent seats. The Japanese-style decor, which combines a pleasant sense of formality with comfort, will surely leave the best impression on your guests. We have rooms that can accommodate 2, 4, 6, or 8 people, and we can guide you to the optimal space for your group size. Rooms with a separate entrance are particularly popular with guests who place a high value on privacy.
